Why Are Hummingbirds Attracted to Bright Colors?

Some plants require hummingbirds for pollination and have brightly colored flowers to which "hummers" are attracted. According to the University of Cincinnati -- Clermont College, this results from a process known as "coevolution," whereby two species that depend on each other evolve together.
  1. Hummingbird Senses

    • Like many other birds, hummingbirds have good eyesight but a poor sense of smell, according to the University of Cincinnati - Clermont College website.

    Competition

    • According to the University of Kentucky, bees can see colors, with the exception of red. Because of this, the nectar of red flowers is less sought after by bees, which makes red flowers a less competitive, and so more attractive, source of nectar to hummingbirds.

    Flowers

    • Over time, adaptations have developed in certain plants that require hummingbirds for pollination, according to the University of Cincinnati website. These plants generally have brightly colored flowers, particularly red flowers, and have no scent.
