How to Evaluate Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam (also known as visco-elastic foam) was developed by NASA to reduce the impact of g-forces on astronauts in space. Memory foam is now widely used in commercially produced mattresses for consumer sale. Although there are many different types and brands of memory foam mattresses available, not all are created equally.

Test memory-foam mattresses in person to gauge your preferences.

You'll probably want to read online user reviews of various brands of memory foam mattresses, but the best way to figure out your personal preferences is to test them out at a local mattress store. Sit and lie down on a variety of memory foam mattresses and see how they feel. Traditional mattress typically offer a plush top with a firm, somewhat bouncy feel from the inner spring construction. Memory-foam mattresses offer firm, consistent support all over that gives slightly to the weight of the body and molds itself to your form.

A memory-foam mattress that traps heat can make an uncomfortable night's sleep.

Check the temperature reaction of the mattress. Memory foam is designed to react to the body's temperature, and the heat transfer from a body is what allows the foam to mold itself to the body. Some memory foam mattresses have a tendency to trap this body heat and radiate it back to the sleeper, while other memory foam is made to absorb excess heat rather than trapping it against the body. Ask a salesperson, review the product description and lie down and test a mattress to help determine the temperature reaction.

Memory-foam mattress covers provide insulation and protection for the mattress.

Examine the mattress cover. Most memory foam mattresses are made with a removable cover, and the materials used will be noted on the tag or within the product descriptions. Mattress covers can be made with cotton materials, down filling or special quilting; some even offer fire protection and leak protection. Feel the fabric to give you an idea of the quality of construction and whether it will stand up to years of sleeping. The mattress cover is designed to protect the mattress and provide insulation for the sleeper. A thicker, well-made cover will provide better protection for the mattress over time.

Check both the thickness and density of a memory-foam mattress.

Verify the density and thickness of the mattress. Memory foam mattresses come in varying thicknesses, but the density is also important to take into consideration. A mattress measuring 9 inches thick could be less dense than a mattress that is 5 inches thick. A denser mattress will feel firmer and more supportive when you lie down, but the softer feel of a less dense mattress may your preference. You'll also want to check the thickness of the memory foam mattress to be sure it will fit in your bed frame.

Some higher-priced models might be a better value than cheaper versions.

Compare the price points, as memory foam mattresses can differ greatly in price. An inexpensive memory foam mattress can range from $150 for a twin size to $300 for a king size. More expensive models can be priced at over $3,000 for a twin size and more than $6,000 for a king size. You may feel comfortable spending a lesser amount on a more affordable model, but some higher-priced models might offer a better guarantee and a longer warranty that results in a better overall value.
