Remove all objects, food and appliances from the counter. Clean the entire counter surface with a rag, soap and water. Let the surface air dry until no moisture remains.
Load a power sander with rough-grit sandpaper. Don a high-level nose-and-mouth filter mask. Begin sanding the Technibond kitchen counter’s surface, working back and forth following the material’s lines. Sand corners, edges and cracks as well as possible. Flatten or round the countertop edges if desired.
Sand the corners and hard-to-reach places by hand, using a cut out section of sandpaper. Wipe down the surface. Repeat the sanding with medium-grit sandpaper until all traces of the old finish are removed. Wipe the surface down and resand it using fine-grit sandpaper, sanding by hand if necessary for greater control. Wipe down the countertop.
Squeezing caulking into each crack or opening in or around the cabinet gives it a complete seal against water. Force the caulking into spots using a toothpick. Let the caulking dry for a few hours.
Apply a light coat of stain or paint to the countertop using a brush with smooth, even strokes. Let the first coat dry a few hours and repeat until the desired appearance is reached.
Apply four or five thorough coats of food-grade, nontoxic sealant, letting the sealant dry for a few hours between each coat.
