How to Self Install Berber Carpet Tiles

Berber carpet tiles are a solution if you want to install carpet yourself without a lot of fuss. You can install the tiles over subfloors that include hardwood, vinyl and linoleum. Although Berber can be more expensive than other types of carpet, it affords a great deal of durability, withstanding more foot traffic than other carpet. Carpet tiles do not require padding or tack strips, and will not damage the flooring beneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your room twice. Knowing the exact measurements of the area to be covered will ensure that you purchase the appropriate amount of tiles.

    • 2

Vacuum and mop the subfloor to get rid of dirt and dust. Let the flooring dry completely.

    • 3

Set all of your tiles down in the room where you will install them. It may be helpful to lay out some of the tiles with the backing still if on you are creating a pattern with different tiles -- it will allow you to play with the design and get it just right before sticking the tiles to the floor.

    • 4

Begin installing the tiles in a corner furthest from the exit. Peel off the paper from the back of the tile and place it on the ground. Apply pressure to secure the tile to the subfloor. Continue installing tiles in rows.

    • 5

Cut tiles that need to fit around obstacles, or that are too big once you get to the end of a row, using a utility knife.

    • 6

Wait to walk on the tiles per the instructions of the manufacturer.
