How to Grow Strawberries in Vertical Tubes

Vertical tubes increase the amount of growing space for strawberries. These systems are similar to other container methods, like barrels, or to commercial hanging bags. Because the plants are inserted into holes drilled in the sides of a vertical pipe, they have good drainage needed for growing strawberries. Using vertical tubes for growing strawberries will free your garden space for other plants or allow you to grow the berries on a porch or balcony.

Instructions

    • 1

Glue the cap for the 6-inch PVC pipe onto one end.

    • 2

Drill two 1/2-inch holes on opposite sides of the pipe at the open end, and tie a rope between these for hanging the growing container, and drill three 1/2-inch drainage holes at the bottom of the pipe, just above the cap.

    • 3

Drill one 2 1/2-inch-diameter hole per strawberry plant at regular intervals along the length and around the 6-inch PVC pipe.

    • 4

Drill 1/2-inch holes every 2 inches along the length of the 1-inch PVC pipe to create drainage holes for watering.

    • 5

Insert the 1-inch PVC pipe into the larger pipe.

    • 6

Fill the area between the pipes with potting soil.

    • 7

Insert the strawberry plants into the holes on the larger pipe.

    • 8

Pour water into the center, smaller pipe to water the plants.

    • 9

Hang the pipe in an accessible spot where you can regularly add water to the central pipe, once or twice a week to keep the potting soil moist.
