How to Grow Strawberries in a Drainage Pipe

Strawberries are a tasty edition to a home garden, but growing them in a traditional garden bed can present problems like the fruit resting on the ground and rotting or the strawberries overtaking other plants in the garden. Creating a container out of a drainage pipe is one solution to these problems. These containers take up less room, allow you to use vertical space and keep strawberries contained to one spot.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-inch PVC drainage pipe
  • Weed block cloth
  • Potting soil
  • Strawberry plants
  • Drill

Mark where you'd like the holes located on the outside of the drainage pipe. Stagger the openings so that plants can trail down a bit on the sides and to make reaping your strawberry planter crop simpler. The University of California's Master Gardener program recommends spacing the openings about 4 inches apart. Drill the holes with a 2-inch or 3-inch drill bit.

Place the tower in an area that receives full sunlight. Dig a small hole about 3 inches deep. Set the PVC pipe upright in the hole so that one open end is on the ground and the other facing the sky. The pipes can also be set up on a patio, but may need additional support to remain upright. Back-fill the dirt around the bottom of the pipe to add stability.

Place the weed block cloth down into the pipe. The cloth should cover the ground and the inside walls of the tower. The cloth will help hold the soil inside the container so that it does not spill out of the openings. Fill the container with potting soil to the top of the pipe.

Cut a small slit in each hole in the pipe and plant one strawberry plant in each opening. Work from the bottom of the tower to the top. Once each hole is filled with a plant, irrigate the pipe by watering from the top and also around the sides.
