How to Take Care of Parade Roses Indoors After Buying Them

Parade roses (Rosa spp.), also called miniature roses, often are sold as blooming potted plants. They are descendants of the China rose (Rosa chinensis minima) and usually grow 6 to 18 inches tall but may grow as tall as 4 feet. Miniature roses have the same basic care requirements as full-size roses, but their blooms are no bigger than 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Because of their high light and humidity requirements, parade roses can be difficult to grow indoors. They are hardy outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 through 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the soil surface of each miniature rose's pot. If a plant's roots are above the soil surface, the plant needs to be repotted into a larger pot. Choose a pot no more than two sizes larger than the plant's current pot, and ensure each pot has bottom drainage holes. Repot each miniature rose plant as needed throughout its life.

    • 2

Repot miniature roses in pots containing a peat moss potting mix or a potting mix formulated for acid-loving plants. Add enough potting mix to each pot so that the top of its rose's roots will be about 2 inches below the pot's top. Plant each rose plant at the same soil depth it grew in its previous pot. Set each plant's roots in the center of its pot, and fill the remainder of its pot with more potting mix until the roots are covered.

    • 3

Place the miniature roses in a south- or west-facing window where they will receive at least five or six hours of direct sunlight each day. If the roses become lanky with few leaves per stem, supplement the natural sunlight with light from a grow light placed about 12 inches from the plants.

    • 4

Rotate the miniature roses' pots weekly to ensure all sides of the plants receive an equal distribution of light.

    • 5

Increase humidity if the plants' leaves yellow, shrivel and drop. Fill small containers with pebbles and water, and set the containers next to the roses. Refill the containers with water as they dry.

    • 6

Water the miniature roses when the top 1 inch of their soil dries. Water thoroughly at the base of each plant until water runs out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pots.

    • 7

Fertilize the roses during the growing season with a rose fertilizer at 1/4 strength. If you use a continuous-release fertilizer, for example, use 1/2 tablespoon of the fertilizer for each plant every two months. Sprinkle the continuous-release fertilizer evenly on each plant's soil, scrape it into the top 1 inch of the soil and water the soil.

    • 8

Rinse the tops and undersides of the miniature rose plants' leaves weekly with water. Doing so discourages spider mites.

    • 9

Remove spent blooms as you see them throughout the plants' bloom period.

    • 10

Prune the roses in winter with pruning snips. Remove dead canes, or dead stems, completely. Cut new growth back by one-half, or cut each plant to a desired shape. Cut back all canes that are too lanky.
