How to Build a Raspberry Fence

Raspberries grow in tangled hedges formed from long arcing canes. If cultivating the berries for the purpose of harvesting them, building a fence or trellis and training the canes makes picking the berries easier. If the tip of a cane touches the ground, it will root and form a new cane the following year, so keeping the canes off the ground will control the thickness of your hedge. Many types of fences may be built, but the simplest is often the most effective means of support and control.

Instructions

    • 1

Sink your posts on either end of your patch, and every 8 feet in between. Raspberries are biennial, so they return year after year with each individual cane lasting two years and new ones continually growing.

    • 2

Nail a cross beam 30 inches wide across the posts roughly 40 inches off the ground.

    • 3

Stretch a strand of fence wire down the row between the the ends of each crossbeam. Electric fence wire is ideal because it is smooth and easy to work with. When finished, you should have two strands of wire 40 inches off the ground and running parallel to one another 30 inches apart.

Secure the wire with fence staples, placing two staples in a V over the tail of the wire and hammering them all the way into the wood.

Train the berry canes by laying those that are tall enough over the wires, bringing them up between the two wires so the tips are facing outward where picking will be easy.
