How to Make a Tension Wire

A tension wire runs along the bottom of a chain-link fence to ensure the fence remains secure. Families with small dogs or other animals that dig out can easily install a tension wire to stop escapes. Even if the dog digs a hole next to the fence, the tension wire prevents the bottom of the fence from lifting. The wire is typically a smaller gauge than the fencing itself. Many chain-link fence packages include the wire.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend approximately 5 inches of the wire around the corner post approximately 2 inches from the ground. Twist the wire end around the other side of the wire with pliers, securing it around the pole.

    • 2

Weave the wire in one diamond and out the next for the length of the fence. Be diligent to always weave the wire in the same horizontal row.

    • 3

Continue until the next corner or gate is reached. Cut the wire 5 inches past the pole, and twist around on itself to secure.

    • 4

Use smaller pieces of wire to secure the tension wire to the fencing if necessary.
