Mark off the boundary line for your fence. Determine how large you want the fence to be. Use wooden stakes to mark where your posts will go, spaced 6 to 8 feet apart. If you don't have wooden stakes, you can use pencils.
Trench out the boundary line. Use a spade to dig a 6 inch trench between where you have marked your fence posts. Continue until the entire boundary has been trenched.
Dig your fence post holes. Use a fence post digger to dig out 2 feet of soil for your fence posts. The fence posts must be sunk 2 feet into the soil for stability.
Insert the fence posts. Tamp the soil around the posts firmly so that they will not move. If necessary, bring in more dirt to fill in the holes completely.
Bury the first roll of chicken wire. By placing the chicken wire 6 inches below the soil line, a dog will be less able to dig out of the yard. Attach the wire to your fence posts with fence staples. Pound in the staples firmly so that the fence is taut. Stretch it out as you work to ensure that there is no gap in the wire.
Add more rolls of chicken wire until the fence is complete. Continue rolling out the chicken wire and attaching it with fence staples until the fence is the desired height.
Fill in the trench with soil. Pack soil down firmly into the trench to ensure that the chicken wire does not curl up.
