How to Plant Corn Seed in New York

According to Cornell University, corn is grown throughout New York state and is a popular crop for both the home gardener and the commercial farmer. Gardeners will want to wait until frost danger has passed before planting corn. Depending on the year and the specific area, Cornell University notes that this occurs from April to July. Gardeners may choose any number of varieties of corn, from sweet corn and bi-color corn to ornamental corn.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soil for planting during the early spring by removing any weeds, cover crop or plants growing in that area. Corn plants need full sunlight to mature and they take up a lot of space.

    • 2

Turn over the soil using a shovel. This aerates it but it also exposes any rocks, tree roots or other debris in the soil. Remove these items before continuing.

    • 3

Once the frost danger has passed, dig a trench about 4-feet long and 1/2- to 1-inch deep using a trowel. Sow corn seeds in the trench, leaving 4 to 6 inches of space between the seeds. Cover over the row with soil when you've planted the entire length.

    • 4

Repeat, making three more trenches, leaving three feet of space between them. Corn needs a minimum of four rows for pollination. You may plant additional rows if you wish, working in the same manner.

Water the area when you've planted all corn seeds, giving the ground a nice soak. Wait two days, then water again if you've received no rain.
