How to Grow Gazania Flowers

Gazania flowers (Gazania rigens), also called treasure flowers or African daisies, are tender perennials grown as annuals in most regions. They boast blooms up to 4 inches in diameter and are available in an almost endless number of color combinations, including various shades of red, pink, coral, orange and yellow. The foliage grows up to 10 inches tall and the flower stems extend from 6 to 10 inches above the leaves. Gazania flowers thrive in full sun and are tolerant of both heat and drought. They grow well in practically any well-drained soil and require little maintenance to remain healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull up the grass and weeds from the planting site.

    • 2

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and deep enough to set the gazania at its original level.

    • 3

Replace about a third of the loose garden soil with organic compost to add beneficial nutrients and improve drainage.

    • 4

Place the roots into the hole and cover thoroughly. Water until the soil feels evenly moist.

    • 5

Spread 2 inches of mulch under the gazania flowers to protect their roots and discourage weeds.

    • 6

Provide supplemental water only when the top inch of soil dries out.

    • 7

Apply balanced fertilizer, at the rate and in the manner indicated on the package directions, approximately two weeks after introducing the plants to the landscape.

    • 8

Clip off faded blooms with pruning shears to encourage a longer bloom cycle.
