How to Grow Calandiva

Calandiva is a variety of succulent, technically a perennial flowering plant. Perennials tend to be long-lived and can be kept in water for replanting. It is a cultivar of the Kalanchoe, bred by Fides Goldstock Breeding in the Netherlands in 2003. This flower is typically not offered as a seedling, due to the proprietary nature of the cultivar. As with most plants, however, Calandiva can be grown from a cutting.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant a cutting (about 2 to 9 inches in length) from another Calandiva in a round, medium-size pot with standard potting soil at room temperature. Use an initial fertilizer mix of 3:1:3 NPK fertilizer in regular intervals, or with slow-release tablets.

    • 2

Water according to season, until the soil appears wet in the summer and somewhat less in the winter, to avoid freezing or cold-shocking the roots or leaves. Position the plant into a south-facing window for maximum sun exposure during colder months.

    • 3

Watch closely for 14 to 21 weeks, monitoring temperature, light exposure, fertilizer levels and water retention. Succulents usually sprout without much tending, but special attention must be paid to maintaining a temperature of between 68 to 72 degrees F, using heat lamps, and proper shade to counteract too much or not enough sun.
