How Often Do You Water Japanese Maples?

Young Trees (first one to two years)

Water Japanese maple trees twice a week for the first two growing seasons. This helps establish deep roots. Soak deeply until water starts to run off.

Mature trees (after 2 years)

• Water mature Japanese maples once per week during dry weather conditions, deeply until the water runs off.

• The soil around Japanese maples should be consistently moist, but not soggy.

Factors to consider

• Japanese maples growing in full sun may need to be watered more frequently than those that are growing in partial shade.

• The amount of water required will also vary depending on the soil conditions. Japanese maples planted in sandy soil will need to be watered more frequently than those planted in clay soil.

• Japanese maples can go dormant during extended dry periods. If this happens, the leaves may turn yellow or brown and fall off. Dormant Japanese maples should not be watered as much as those that are actively growing.
