How to Decorate Landscape With Old Brick

Old brick, whether left over from construction or saved from a demolition project, can find new life as elements in yard landscaping. Even old brick that's not in the best shape is usable in certain projects. Use bricks of the same color or try to find different colors for variety.

Instructions

    • 1

Use old bricks to form a border around things such as garden beds, trees and walkways. Bricks can help to define the space around these and similar spaces within a yard. Place them directly around the edges in a row or dig a small trench slightly wider than the brick and place them within. Fill in the edges around the brick with dirt for a more secure option.

    • 2

Create a patio or path of any size within your yard if you have a large amount of old bricks to work with. Clear a flat space in the dirt and lay the old brick in the pattern and shape of your choosing. Stop at this point for a rugged look or fill in the spaces between the brick with grout for a finished look.

    • 3

Build a wall with a large number of old bricks. A weathered look will add a rustic element to an outdoor space. Form a level foundation and use mortar to hold the bricks together.

    • 4

Form an elevated stand for planters, yard ornaments or flower pots. Arrange several bricks so they form a square or rectangle pattern on the ground. Place the pot or artwork on top when complete.

    • 5

Crush the old brick into stone-sized gravel and use to form a pathway. This provides a landscaping option for old brick that's in bad shape or already crumbling from age. You can also use the brick gravel to line the edge of your house or in any spot where you'd normally use regular gravel.
