Rock retaining walls less than 4 feet tall usually last for many years without the added benefit of mortar. However, walls taller than 4 feet need the extra holding power that mortar offers. The mortar mixing process only takes a few minutes. Mix the mortar in a wheelbarrow so you can easily transport it from one location to another. Since your retaining wall needs to move slightly to accommodate the ground's freezing and thawing process, do not make your mortar too thick and strong.
