How to Mix Mortar to Patch a Wall

Cement walls in houses, garages, sheds and gardens provide tough and secure support, and they last for many years. They withstand wind, water and snow, and they help maintain even temperatures inside the structure. Even walls wear down over time, though, with cracks, chips and various breakages. Keep your walls healthy and stable with consistent maintenance and patching. If you're patching a crack or a chip, mix thick mortar for strength and easy application.

Instructions

Create your own mortar mix for greater control and stability. Add 1 part quick-set concrete to 2 parts fine or masonry sand in an expendable bucket. Quick-set concrete sets quickly and makes application easier, but using it also means that you'll have to work more quickly.

Add a small amount of water to the mixture and stir. Add more water and stir again. Continue this process until the mortar reaches an oatmeal-like consistency. Adding too much water too quickly results in runny, unusable mortar.

    • 3

Mix thoroughly to break up chunks of sand or cement. Use the stir stick to clean dry material out of the corners of your bucket and mix them into the wet mortar. Chunky mortar does not spread well.
