How to Remove Moth Ball Smell From Suede

Moth balls keep moths from eating the fabric of clothing when clothes are put away for the season or in storage. Moth balls have a distinct odiferous smell that lingers in clothing and fabrics to repel pests. The smell is released into everything around it as the moth balls change from a solid form to a gas that is released when they contact air. This smell is offensive to some people and can cause serious allergic reactions to people with allergies or compromised lung functions. Removing the odor may take several applications depending on the strength.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a suede jacket or coat outdoors in the sunshine for four days up to a week to help release the moth ball smell. Take the jacket or coat indoors at night so that dew does not ruin the fabric.

    • 2

Sprinkle baking soda on your suede outerwear on the entire exterior surface. Place the jacket in a garbage bag and allow it to sit overnight. Clean the baking soda off the suede item with a small hand vacuum. Repeat this step using pet odor neutralizer if the smell remains.

    • 3

Place the jacket in your dryer by itself with six or eight dryer sheets. Turn the dryer on the no-heat or air fluff cycle. Allow the dryer to tumble the clothing for about 30 minutes. If the odor remains repeat drying for 30 minutes at a time until the garment smells fresh.
