Soak your workout clothes before washing them. Add a cup of baking soda or borax to your washer load and run your clothes through the rinse cycle. Additionally, adding a cup of iodized salt dissolved in hot water can soften the water and allow cleaning agents to penetrate fabrics.
Use a detergent designed to eliminate body odor or urine smells. Tide Sport, SportWash and ProWash Activewear detergents are specifically made to remove smells with an acid base. Use the amount of detergent specified on the bottle for the best results.
Line dry your polyester clothing. The sun acts as a disinfectant, killing the bacteria that can make clothes smell.
Clean your washer and dryer with an antibacterial soap. Repeat washing of workout clothing may make your washer and dryer smell like the locker room. Clean the inside of your laundry appliances once a week to prevent transferring smells to other laundry.
