How to Make a Closet Out of an Alcove

Add more organizational space to your home by turning an alcove into a closet. Small alcoves are often overlooked when a room is filled with furnishings and accessories. Instead of just filling the space with a chair and an end table or a pile of unused items, you can make more effective use of the space. Install adjustable wire closet shelving on the back wall of the alcove and hang a curtain across it to create a decorative and efficient closet space. The use of a curtain instead of a door creates a softer appearance within the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the curtain rod mounting brackets in place at the top of alcove on each side of the opening. Place a level across the top of the brackets and adjust their positions so that they are level.

    • 2

Drive the screws included with the curtain rod through the mounting holes in the brackets into the wall with a screw gun.

    • 3

Slide the curtain panels onto the curtain rod and hang it over the mounting brackets to close off the alcove.

    • 4

Open the curtain panels so that you can access the back wall of the alcove. Slide a stud finder across the back wall and mark the location of the wall studs with a pencil.

    • 5

Select two wall studs that are spaced 32 inches apart in the center of the back wall of the alcove. Position one slotted shelving bar vertically on the wall at each of the selected studs. This will allow the shelving to rest across the brackets that lock into the slotted shelving bars. Drive the included screws through the mounting holes in the slotted shelving bars into the wall studs with a screw gun.

    • 6

Pivot the shelf support brackets into the corresponding slots in the slotted shelving bars at each position along the bar where you would like a shelf to be located. Slide a shelf over each set of shelf support brackets and lock the front of the shelves into place over the brackets.
