How to Organize My Clothes in a Small Apartment

If you have many clothes and little closet space in a small home, such as a tiny apartment, organization is the key to making efficient use of the space. The first priority is to get rid of items that you no longer use or those that are duplicates. Many people try to cram all their belongings into a small apartment only to realize later that they truly never use many of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the clutter by being honest with yourself about your wardrobe. If you haven't worn an article of clothing in a year, donate it, give it to a friend or discard it. This creates more room in your closet and other areas to store the clothing you actually wear. Do this in the rest of the apartment as well: if it is not functional or attractive, get rid of it.

Label plastic storage containers with an index card, tape and a permanent marker. Put seasonal clothing, sports gear and other rarely used items in these containers. Store them under your bed, on a high shelf in a closet or in a friend or relative's attic space.

    • 3

Add another clothes rod in your closet to double your space. This allows you to hang shirts, jackets and sweaters on the top rod and skirts and pants on the bottom rod.

    • 4

Install closet organizers that add space to the existing closet. Remove the organizers to take with you if you relocate in the future. Many types of closet organization systems are inexpensive and relatively simple to add to the existing closet space.

    • 5

Invest in multipurpose furniture whenever you buy new furnishings, such as a hope chest that doubles as storage and seating. Other options are an entertainment center or computer desk with many drawers. Store seasonal or additional clothing in these areas to free up more closet space.

Add a room divider or an armoire you purchase at a thrift shop or garage sale to add extra closet space to your bedroom. The room divider will hide a rolling clothes rack, a stack of storage boxes or a clothesline. Armoires have many different compartments to store and hang clothing.
