How to Remove Window Glass From Rubber Molding

Window glass can become hazy, scratched, or permanently stained over time. This makes the glass hard to see through, and can detract from your home's beauty. Replacing the old glass involves removing it from the window frame. In many cases, the glass is held securely in the frame by a rubber molding. You can safely remove the old glass and ensure that the frame does not become damaged by following a step-by-step procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the perimeter of the rubber molding liberally with a spray lubricant, and let it soak in for 20 minutes. Use a shop towel to wipe excess spray from the window.

    • 2

Spray a putty knife blade with the lubricant to reduce friction. Start at a corner of the rubber molding, because that is most likely where you will find an end. Gently slide the putty knife under the rubber molding to pry it out. Work small sections of the molding with the knife. Place the knife vertically against the top of the molding, and twist it to pull out the molding from the frame.

    • 3

Grasp a piece of the molding, once enough has been extricated from the frame, and pull the molding. Use the putty knife in conjunction with the pulling motion to strip the molding away from the frame.

Continue to work your way around the frame with the same method until the molding has been completely removed. The window glass can now be removed from the frame.
