How to Remove a Foggy Glass Pane

Window panes that have permanently been fogged up or discolored can be replaced. Instead of buying a new window and having to uninstall the existing window frame, you can just replace the clouded pane of glass. This is not difficult but requires that you work with care to avoid cutting yourself and/or dropping the glass pane, sending shards everywhere. To replace a foggy glass pane, you'll need a few common tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the foggy window and unfasten the retaining screws located at the bottom and sides of the window frame using a screw gun.

    • 2

Close the window and unfasten the retaining screws located at the top of the window frame.

    • 3

Score along the outside edges of the window frame with a utility knife to break the caulk bond between the frame and the rough opening.

    • 4

Go to the home's exterior and walk over to the window you are working on. Wedge a pry bar between the window frame and the rough opening. Pry the window frame out of the rough opening.

    • 5

Unfasten the retaining screws on all four corners of the window. Score along the foggy pane against the frame holding the pane with a utility knife.

    • 6

Put on gloves. Pull the frame away from the foggy pane by hand gently and carefully to avoid breakage. The foggy pane will come out of the frame and can be discarded.
