- Used tires (all the same size)
- Gravel or crushed rock
- Rebar rods (at least 12'')
- Wood stakes or scrap lumber
- Sledgehammer or heavy mallet
- Shovel
- Level
Instructions:
1. Prepare the site: Choose a level spot for the tire wall and clear away any vegetation. The ground should be firm and stable. If there's a lot of loose soil or sand, you may need to add some gravel or crushed rock to create a solid base.
2. Layout the tires: Start by laying out the tires in the desired shape for the wall. You can create a straight wall, a curved wall, or even a circular wall. Make sure that the tires are close together so that there are no gaps.
3. Secure the tires: Once the tires are in place, use wood stakes or scrap lumber to secure them in place. Hammer the stakes into the ground on the inside and outside of the tire wall, making sure that the stakes are deep enough to hold the tires firmly.
4. Fill the tires: Use a shovel to fill the tires with gravel or crushed rock. This will help to weigh the tires down and make the wall more stable. Compact the gravel or crushed rock firmly so that there are no gaps.
5. Install rebar rods: Add extra reinforcement by inserting rebar rods through the tires at regular intervals. This will help to ensure that the wall holds its shape and does not collapse.
6. Compact the gravel: Once the tires are filled, use a sledgehammer or heavy mallet to compact the gravel or crushed rock. This will help to ensure that the wall is stable and sturdy.
7. Finish the wall: Once the wall is built, you can add a finishing touch by painting it or adding decorations. You can also plant flowers or other plants around the base of the wall to add some color and beauty.
Tips:
- Make sure the foundation is leveled before you place the tires.
- Use a variety of tire sizes to create more texture and interest.
- Secure the tires tightly to avoid collapsing with heavy rain or wind.
- Add extra reinforcement if you're building a tall wall.
- Remember that a tire wall is a permanent fixture, so make sure you're happy with the location and design before you start building.
