How to Build a Retaining Wall in Front of an Existing

Materials Needed:

- Concrete blocks

- Gravel

- Rebar

- Mortar

- Level

- Tape measure

- Shovel

- Wheelbarrow

- Trowel

- Safety goggles

- Gloves

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Site:

- Mark the area where you want to build the retaining wall.

- Remove any grass, plants, and debris from the area.

- Dig a trench along the marked line, about 8-12 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

2. Install the Gravel Base:

- Pour a 4-inch layer of gravel into the trench.

- Compact the gravel using a tamper or hand-held compactor.

3. Lay the First Course of Blocks:

- Start laying the concrete blocks on top of the gravel base.

- Make sure the blocks are level and aligned with each other.

- Use a rubber mallet to tap the blocks into place if needed.

4. Install Rebar:

- After the first course of blocks is laid, place a piece of rebar in the gaps between the blocks.

- The rebar will help to reinforce the wall.

5. Continue Building the Wall:

- Continue stacking the blocks, alternating the direction of the blocks each course.

- Use mortar to fill the gaps between the blocks as you go.

- Make sure to level and align each course of blocks.

6. Cap the Wall:

- Once the wall is at the desired height, cap it with a row of concrete blocks.

- Secure the cap blocks with mortar.

7. Backfill the Wall:

- Backfill the area behind the wall with soil.

- Compact the soil to secure the wall.

8. Add Gravel Around the Base

- Add a layer of gravel around the base of the wall to improve drainage.

Additional Tips:

- Use a level to make sure each course of blocks is level.

- Stagger the joints between the blocks to create a stronger wall.

- Use a trowel to spread the mortar evenly between the blocks.

- Wear safety goggles and gloves when working with concrete blocks and mortar.

- Allow the mortar to dry completely before moving or using the retaining wall.
