Materials Needed:
- ABS cement (solvent)
- ABS primer
- 100-grit sandpaper
- ABS repair coupling (for small leaks) or ABS coupling and short pipe section (for larger leaks)
- Measuring tape
- Hacksaw
- Utility knife
- Safety glasses
- Rags
Step 1: Preparation
1. Turn off the water supply to the affected area.
2. Drain any remaining water from the pipes by opening the nearest faucet or drain valve.
Step 2: Identify the Leak
1. Inspect the ABS pipe to locate the exact source of the leak. Look for cracks, holes, or damaged sections.
Step 3: Cut the Pipe (for Larger Leaks)
1. If the leak is significant and requires a pipe replacement, use a hacksaw to cut out the damaged section. Ensure you have enough space to insert a new pipe section.
Step 4: Sand the Pipe
1. Using the sandpaper, roughen the surface of the ABS pipe around the leak for a better bond. This is crucial for both repair methods.
Step 5: Apply ABS Primer (Both Methods)
1. Apply a thin coat of ABS primer to the sanded area. This helps the ABS cement adhere properly. Let it dry according to the primer's instructions.
Option 1: ABS Repair Coupling
1. If the leak is small and can be patched, use an ABS repair coupling.
2. Insert the ABS coupling over the damaged section and push it as far as it will go.
3. Apply a generous amount of ABS cement to the inside of the coupling and the corresponding pipe surfaces.
4. Quickly insert the coupling fully and hold it firmly in place for a few seconds. The ABS cement will set quickly.
Option 2: ABS Coupling and Pipe Section
1. For larger leaks or pipe replacements, use an ABS coupling and a short section of ABS pipe.
2. Cut the replacement pipe section to the desired length.
3. Apply ABS cement to the outside of the pipe section and the inside of the coupling.
4. Insert the pipe section into the coupling until it's fully seated.
5. Apply ABS cement to the other end of the pipe section and insert it into the existing ABS pipe.
Step 6: Let the Cement Dry
1. Allow the ABS cement to dry completely according to the product instructions. This can take several hours or overnight.
Step 7: Restore Water Supply
1. Once the ABS cement has fully dried, you can turn the water supply back on and check for leaks.
Note:
- Make sure to follow all safety guidelines and wear protective gear, especially when working with ABS cement, which can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
- If you're not confident in your plumbing abilities or if the leak is too extensive, consider hiring a professional plumber to ensure a proper repair.
