How do I Install a Drop-in Bathtub in an Alcove & Tile It?

Note: Shut off the water supply and turn off the electricity to the bathroom before starting any work.

Install the drain pipe

- Place the tub drain in the drain hole.

- Insert the O-ring into the slot around the drain.

- Put the drain flange over the drain and O-ring.

- Tighten the nuts on the flange to secure the drain.

Assemble the tub feet

- If your bathtub has feet, assemble them now.

- Follow the instructions that came with your tub.

- Tip: Some bathtubs come with pre-assembled adjustable feet.

Set the bathtub in place

- Carefully place the bathtub into the alcove.

- Make sure the drain pipe is lined up with the drain hole in the floor.

- Adjust the feet to level the tub.

- Shims may be needed under the feet to level the tub.

Connect the water supply

- Connect the water supply lines to the tub faucets according to the manufacturer's instructions.

- Use plumbers tape (PTFE tape) on all threaded connections.

- Tighten the connections with a wrench.

- Connect the drain pipe to the drain in the floor.

Apply the tile surround

- Apply a bead of caulk around the base of the tub where the tile will meet it.

- Install the tile surround.

- Use spacers between the tiles to create uniform grout lines.

- Let the tile adhesive cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Install the trim

- Trim covers around the tub and faucets using a utility knife.

- Caulk the seams between the tub, tile surround, and trim pieces to prevent leaks.

- Let the caulk dry completely before using the bathtub.
