Water Is Leaking From the Furnace When the AC Is On

Combination furnace and AC units need regular cleaning to maintain proper functionality. Without proper cleaning, water buildup inside the unit may develop into algae clogs that can cause leaks at the furnace unit when the AC is running. However, algae clogs are not your only possible source of leaks; bad drain line connections and a dirty condensation coil unit can also cause leaks. Troubleshooting and solving common leak sources will have your furnace unit as dry as a bone.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws from the cover surrounding the evaporator coils at the main unit. The cover is located at the top of the main unit. Pull the cover off.

    • 2

Vacuum the coils with a soft brush attachment to remove any dust that may be causing clogs to the drain line.

    • 3

Follow the drain line down from the evaporator coils and inspect all the connections to determine if any are loose. Tighten loose connections with a wrench.

    • 4

Locate the end of the condensate drain line outside the home.

    • 5

Place the end of a vacuum onto the pipe. Wrap the pipe and the vacuum end with a rag. Turn on the vacuum for five seconds to remove any clogs from the pipe.

    • 6

Pour a cup of bleach into the drain line access hole on the inside of the house. This will kill any leftover algae.
