My Whirlpool Refrigerator Is Leaking Water From the Freezer

Whirlpool refrigerators quickly cool items in the refrigerator, store tall or bulky food items, filter and dispense ice and water, and many even have an electronic display and control pad for easy temperature control. However, one thing you might not expect from your Whirlpool refrigerator is for water to leak from the refrigerator. Correcting this problem may take some investigation and effort.
  1. Dispenser Problems

    • Sometimes the reason for a leak from the freezer compartment is simple, such as a leak from the dispenser on the freezer door. An ice cube can get stuck in the chute and melt, causing drips, or water can leak down from the water dispenser. In addition, the dispenser tray does not have an automatic drain and can overflow, causing water to leak down the front of the freezer. Lift out the dispenser tray when the tray is getting full with water and empty the tray in the sink. Push any ice cubes through the chute and always hold the glass under the water dispenser for a second or two to catch any leftover drips.

    Defrost Drain Problems

    • The defrost drain is located in the freezer and can sometimes get clogged with frost or even pieces of food. If the defrost drain is clogged, water can leak from the freezer compartment. Locate the drain in the freezer, which is sometimes behind a plastic cover and sometimes just looks like a hole in the side or on the floor of the freezer. Use a hot, wet cloth to remove any frost build-up over the defrost drain and pour hot water and baking soda into the drain to clear any blockages. Keep pouring the baking soda mix into the drain until you hear the water flowing into the drain pan, which is located underneath the refrigerator.

    Drain Pan Problems

    • The drain pan itself can sometimes be the source of a leak from the freezer compartment, as water can overflow from the drain pan or the pan can be cracked or split, allowing water to leak out. Disconnect the refrigerator power and then lift off the the grille from the front of the refrigerator by pushing in on the top of the grille and pulling the bottom of the grille out. Remove the drain pan and empty the pan out if there is excess water in the pan, which can be caused by a clogged defrost drain. Contact Whirlpool for a replacement drain pan if there is any damage, holes or other problems that might allow water to leak out of the pan.

    Water Line Problems

    • Once you have determined that the dispenser is not to blame and cleared out the defrost drain and the drain pan, if water is still leaking from the freezer, take a look at the water line in the rear of the unit. Check for any loose connections that might allow water to leak and tighten as necessary. Contact Whirlpool if the water line connection or tubing seems broken or damaged.
