DIY Motion Sensor Light

Motion sensor lights can give you peace of mind knowing that you can monitor the movement on your property. As the name suggests, motion sensors detect the heat in moving objects, including people, animals and cars. Once motion is detected, fixture lights come on automatically. The lights will stay on as long as motion is detected. Installing motion sensor lights can be a quick process that does not require professional help.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the circuit breakers in the electrical panel in the basement, attic or electrical room and turn them off.

    • 2

Remove the screws on your old motion sensor and remove the fixture. Match the screw holes on the filter plate with the junction screw holes and knock-out screw holes. If the holes are not wide enough, lightly tap the knock-out holes with a hammer and a screwdriver.

    • 3

Thread the wires of your new motion sensor through the cover plate gasket. Connect the black wire on the sensor to the the black wire coming through your wall and then connect then wire the white wires to the white wire coming through the wall. Attach them using the wire connectors that came with your motion sensor. If you have a ground wire coming from your house, attach it to the junction box.

    • 4

Screw the motion sensor to the junction box using the two screws provided. Insert the bulbs into the bulb holders and rotate them clockwise until they tighten.

    • 5

Locate the slide switch and sensory adjustment dial on the bottom of your sensor. Move the slide switch to the "Test" position and then move the sensory adjustment dial to the "Medium" setting or halfway point.

    • 6

Turn on your circuit breakers and turn on the power switch next to your motion sensor lights. The lights come on for about 30 seconds and then go off. Keep moving objects away from the detection zone or the lights will stay on longer.

    • 7

Grab the detector head and move it toward the area where you wish to detect movement. Walk to the farthest point of the detection zone to see if the lights will come on.

    • 8

Grab the lamp holders and move them away from the sensor path if they are interfering with your motion sensor. Do not grab the bulbs because you risk breaking them. Keep moving the lamp holders if the sensor is still causing the lights to go on and off.

    • 9

Aim the lamp holder away from the sensor and position them facing slightly downward so that they will not fill with water during rainy seasons. For improved performance, keep the bulbs at least a 1/2 inch from the the sensor.

    • 10

Adjust the sensitivity dial until the lights go on in the detection zone. The lights will turn off four seconds after motion stops.

    • 11

Move the slide switch to the operational setting you want and then stand in the detection zone one more time to ensure your device is working properly.
