DIY Burgler Alarm

A burglar alarm provides a warning to the homeowner when an unauthorized person enters a home. A do-it-yourself (DIY) burglar alarm that will protect a window of your choosing, such as a window leading to the backyard, can be put together using a stand-alone alarm motion sensor. The motion sensor can be acquired from an electronics store or select hobby shops. A few common tools that are found around the house will be needed, as will a camera tripod.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the camera tripod's legs and stand it in the area where the window that is to be protected is located.

    • 2

Screw the tripod socket on the bottom of the motion sensor into the screw on the top of the tripod's platform. If there is no tripod socket on the motion sensor, break the screw off with the jaws of the pliers, place the motion sensor on the platform and tape it to the tripod with strips of duct tape.

    • 3

Plug the power cord from the motion sensor into a wall outlet; if the distance between the two is too great, use an electrical extension cord to bridge the gap.

    • 4

Rotate the tripod so that the sensor on the front of the motion sensor is facing the window.

    • 5

Loosen the elevation knob on the tripod's platform with your fingers and push the platform down so that the sensor is aimed at the window at a 40-degree angle. Tighten the elevation knob.

    • 6

Open the control panel lid on the side or back of the motion sensor; in some cases, there will be a set-screw to remove first. If there is a set-screw on the lid, loosen it with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver prior to opening the lid.

    • 7

Adjust the knob controlling the alarm's volume to your preference; the actual name of this button will vary depending on the manufacturer of the motion sensor.

    • 8

Adjust the detector's time sensor knob so that the motion detector will begin functioning once the sun has gone down; the knob's name will vary depending on the manufacturer of the motion sensor.

    • 9

Adjust the detector's sensitivity knob to adjust the speed at which the motion sensor will respond to movement across its sensor.

    • 10

Close the control panel lid and tighten the screw, if there is one.

    • 11

Test your DIY burglar alarm by opening the window from the outside; the motion sensor's alarm should sound when it detects the window being raised.

    • 12

Reset the motion sensor by pressing the "Reset" button on its bottom.
