DIY Overhead Light Fixture Covers

Uncovered light fixtures don’t allow the light to be diffused around your room properly. Instead, the light is often too bright and glaring, especially if you have a ceiling light fixture. You can cover your light fixtures with your own do-it-yourself light fixture covers to create more even lighting in your home. Basic household items, such as a wire hanger and some fabric, can make lovely light fixture covers for those glaring overhead bulbs.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pair of pliers to untwist a wire hanger into a straight, workable shape.

    • 2

Twist the wire hanger, starting at the top, into a circle small enough to grip onto the base of the light fixture. Turn the rest of the wire hanger into a larger circle to hold the fabric.

    • 3

Cut out a square of fabric approximately 2 feet long and 10 inches wide. Fold the fabric over lengthwise by 1/2 inch and sew a channel down the fabric with a sewing machine. Use a straight stitch and a ¼-inch seam.

    • 4

Slide the fabric channel onto the wire hanger’s large circle.

    • 5

Unscrew the light fixture from the ceiling and slip the small circle over the base of the fixture. Place the light bulb back in the fixture.
