DIY Hallway Lighting

If there are rooms in your home that have insufficient lighting and you either don't have the expertise to wire fixtures or else are not permitted to do so in you lease, battery-operated lighting is available in a variety of styles and sizes. From small push-on lights to decorative sconces and string lights, there is something to suit just about every budget. Instructions

  1. Stick-On Lights

    • 1

Locate an appropriate place to mount your light. Measure and mark the place according to the size of your stick-on light. You may want to install a light at either end of a long, dark hallway, or smaller lights outside each bedroom door.

    • 2

Install batteries in your stick-on lights. Turn on your light to ensure they work before installing them on the wall. Hold the light in the places you have chosen and check to see if the lighting is going to be sufficient. If not, continue to place the lights in different spots until you find an arrangement that works.

    • 3

Prepare the wall for the stick-on lights by cleaning it thoroughly and allowing it to dry completely. Sand textured walls to provide a better surface to which the adhesive will stick. It's important to clean any sanding dust from the wall thoroughly before installing the light. Some lights may have an adhesive pad that goes onto the wall under the light, while some may be peel-and-stick. Apply the light to the prepared wall according to the package directions.

    Battery-Operated Wall Sconces

    • 4

Measure and mark the desired location for your wall sconce. Place the mounting plate against the wall and mark the screw holes with your pencil. Put the mounting plate aside.

    • 5

Find plastic drywall anchors that are the correct size for the screws in the package. According to the screw size, punch holes in the drywall at the marked spots using a screwdriver or awl and hammer. Place a drywall anchor into the hole and tap it in gently until it is flush with the wall.

    • 6

Place the mounting plate against the wall, lining up the screw holes over the anchors. Place a screw into each anchor and screw the plate onto the wall.

    • 7

Place batteries in the sconce light and test to make sure it works. Attach the sconce light to the mounting plate according to package directions. The light usually slides on and off the backing plate from the top.

    Battery-Operated String Lights

    • 8

Measure the length of the area in which you want to install the lights. Include a drop-down on one end that will allow you to reach the switch if you are installing them at the top of the wall.

    • 9

Insert batteries into the light string switch box. Test the lights to ensure they all work. Replace any bulbs that don't work with replacements bulbs included in the package.

    • 10

Use u-shaped stick pins to attach the lights to the wall, starting at the drop-down point and working toward the end of the string. Space them as needed to hang the lights straight or in swags, according to your preference. Use a ladder to attach the lights to the top of the wall near the ceiling.
