Replace the cushions. If the cushions on your sofa have lost their "fluff," replace them with new ones. Purchase cushions from a furniture retailer or cut foam into cushions. Change the size of the cushions on your sofa. For example, instead of using two or three cushions, use one single cushion across the seat of your sofa.
Add new fabric to the sofa. Reupholster the frame of the sofa and the new sofa cushions. Use material that coordinates with the color scheme and design of the room you are using it in. For example, use gingham fabric for a country room or paisley material for a vintage design. Another option is to use a neutral material that can be used with a variety of decorating styles; solid tan or cream, for example. Instead of reupholstering the sofa, simply drape fabric over it and tack it in place for a less permanent covering.
Add decorative accessories to the sofa. Arrange pillows along the back of the sofa that coordinate with the design and color scheme of the room. Use solid-colored velvet pillows arranged in a straight line in a contemporary space or a combination of patchwork and flannel pillows placed in the corners of the sofa for a rustic space, for example. Place a throw blanket on the sofa. Casually drape a chenille throw blanket across the back of the sofa in a laid-back beach cottage room. Hang a neatly folded suede blanket across the arm of the sofa in a traditional room.
