How to Decorate Around Harvest Gold Appliances

Harvest gold appliances were commonly found in 1970's kitchens. If you have one of these yellow appliances in your kitchen and it's still working just fine, you may be wondering how to decorate around it so your kitchen looks modern and not a flashback to the '70s. The key is to use color, when you are decorating, while avoiding using too many colors found in the 1970s. Color will give balance to the yellow appliances and keep them from standing out like they would against a stark background, such as white or black.

Instructions

Change the color of the cabinets so they complement the appliances. Avoid wood veneer cabinets that were common in the '70s. Instead, try using a solid, natural wood, a wood with a dark stain or laminate cabinets that resemble wood.

Paint the kitchen walls in a color that will stand out against the harvest gold while still complementing it. Green works well with harvest gold and won't make the appliances look any bolder than they already are. Avoid using a green that was common in the '70s since that will make the room look dated. Chartreuse is a green that was commonly found in the '70s. Try a dark forest green or a lighter pale green.

Update all of the hardware on your kitchen cabinets. Hardware that is out-of-style makes a kitchen look dated even if the rest of the decor is modern. Try brushed nickel, wrought iron or stainless steel door pulls and knobs.

Install new flooring of solid wood or laminate. Choose a color that won't overwhelm the room. Dark brown or black will make the harvest gold pop out too much so try natural, lighter colors. Avoid using the yellow-ish flooring found in the '70s.

Accessorize the room to reflect your personal style. You aren't as limited with the accessories as the permanent decor because they are on a smaller scale. Use black, dark brown or white in your wall decorations if desired. You can also add more color, such as red or orange, through artwork. Put down a throw rug that pulls the colors from your wall art together.
