How to Decorate Around a Maroon Couch

Paint a focal wall and choose a paint color that contrasts with the maroon couch. Choose a wall that features a strong architectural element like a fireplace or a built-in bookcase, if the room has one. Paint it a color such as spring green or honey yellow; these hues provide strong color contrasts to the couch.

Decorate the focal wall with items that reinforce the decorative element the couch brings to the room. For example, hang a large mirror above the mantel. Flank it on both sides with sconces that have maroon candles in them. Show off a collection of maroon leather-bound books on the mantel. Select small pieces of art that feature maroon as the dominant color. Look for maroon tapestries for a Tuscan-style room or hang Japanese scrolls featuring dashes of maroon-colored brush work.

Set up a display in the fireplace. Position a mirror so that it stands against the back wall of the mouth of the fireplace. Display a variety of candles. Choose colors like maroon, green and cream and find candles of different sizes and shapes for the display.

Decorate the floor by painting it a color that contrasts the maroon color of the couch. For example, paint the floor a shade of beige, cream or off-white and add a large graphic element, such as simplified bamboo leaf pattern or a geometric design. Include flecks of maroon paint in your design.

Position the couch so that it's facing the focal wall.

Choose decorative pillows that add pattern to the room and contrast with the couch. Select pillows that feature such patterns as paisley, Fleur-de-lis, stripes and polka dots. Make sure that these pillows feature maroon and your accent colors. The different patterns will work well together because the colors bind them.

Place a table or a bench that stands equally as high as the back of the couch behind the couch. Decorate it with items such as pottery that contrasts with the maroon couch, dried floral arrangements and art deco lamps that have maroon stained glass.

Push a coffee table in front of the couch. Choose a table that has a glass top. This allows you to see the painted floor and won't detract from the vibrant color of the couch.
