Materials:
- 2 wooden dowels (at least 1 inch in diameter and about 30 inches long)
- 2 large zip ties
- String (such as nylon cord or yarn)
- A pair of scissors
- Measuring tape
- Optional: A drill (if the dowels don't have holes)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the dowels:
- If your dowels don't have holes near the ends, use a drill to create a hole about 1 inch from each end of both dowels.
2. Attach the zip ties:
- Slide one end of each zip tie through the holes in the dowels.
- Pull the zip ties tight to secure the dowels together in a cross shape.
3. Wind the string around the dowels:
- Start by tying a knot at one end of the string.
- Wrap the string around the top and bottom dowels, alternating between them.
- Continue winding the string until the dowels are completely covered, except for the area near the holes where the zip ties are attached.
- Secure the string with another knot.
4. Weave your scarf:
- Choose your yarn or threads. You can use any type of yarn, but thicker yarns will produce a more textured scarf.
- Cut the yarn into lengths that are at least twice as long as the desired finished width of your scarf.
- Start by tying one end of the yarn to the top dowel.
- Weave the yarn over and under the warp strings (the strings wound around the dowels).
- Continue weaving the yarn, alternating between over and under the warp strings.
- As you weave, keep the weft strings (the yarn you're using) taut to create a firm, even weave.
5. Finish the scarf:
- Once you've reached the desired length, tie off the yarn at the bottom dowel.
- Remove the scarf from the loom.
- Trim any excess warp strings, leaving about 2 inches of fringe at each end.
- Your woven scarf is now complete and ready to wear or give as a gift!
