How Do I Replace the Evaporator Motor in a GE Refrigerator?

The evaporator fan in your GE refrigerator consists of two components: the motor and the fan blade. The motor is the mechanical part of the evaporator fan, and if it dies, the fan blade will not rotate. The proper functioning of the evaporator fan is crucial to the cooling of your refrigerator, as it circulates the air around the freezer. The circulation of air not only eliminates warm spots in your freezer, it also ensures that the air flows through the damper and into the fresh food compartment, which is how the compartment is cooled. If the evaporator fan motor fails, you must remove it from the freezer and install a new one.

    • 2

Remove all of the items in the freezer and place them in a cooler with ice.

    • 3

Remove the ice maker, if applicable. To remove the ice maker, remove the mounting screws securing it to the freezer wall, then disconnect the ice maker wire connector. Remove the ice maker from the freezer.

    • 4

Remove the shelving from the freezer compartment.

    • 5

Remove the screws at the base of the air duct, in the center of the rear panel.

    • 6

Remove the rear panel of the freezer, as well as the duct pieces behind the main duct panel.

    • 7

Remove the screws from the rear panel of the freezer. Pull the panel out of the freezer.

    • 8

Pull the evaporator fan blade off the evaporator motor shaft and set it aside.

    • 9

Remove the two screws securing the evaporator fan motor bracket. Pull the bracket and the motor away from the rear of the freezer.

    • 10

Detach the wire connector from the evaporator motor fan. Discard the motor fan.

    • 11

Attach the new evaporator fan motor wire connector to the refrigerator's wire harness.

    • 12

Pass the evaporator motor fan blade post through the hole in the center of the bracket. Secure both the motor and the bracket to the rear wall of the freezer. If applicable, reconnect the grounding wire to the bracket screw from which it was removed.

    • 13

Press the fan blade onto the evaporator motor shaft.

    • 14

Reinstall the rear panel, air ducts, ice maker and shelves by reversing the steps taken to remove them.

    • 15

Return the contents of the freezer to the compartment.
