How to Replace an Evaporator Coil on a Kenmore Refrigerator

The evaporator unit within the back interior panel of a Kenmore freezer helps to evaporate the coolant used to keep the refrigerator cool. If you notice coolant leaking from the back panel or if the freezer isn't staying cold enough, you may want to inspect the evaporator coils to see if the part needs to be fully replaced. The coils can be removed from the evaporator unit, and you can order new evaporator coils from the Kenmore manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your Kenmore refrigerator away from the wall, and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Open the refrigerator's freezer door and remove all of the contents from the freezer. Pull out all of the panels and doors from the inside of the refrigerator.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the back interior panel using a Phillips screwdriver, and remove the panel from the inside of the freezer.

    • 4

Locate the evaporator coils in the back center of the freezer, and remove the bolts from the mounting clamps using a 1/4-inch nut driver.

    • 5

Lift up and remove the clamps from the evaporator coils. Lift out the coils, disconnecting them from the evaporator unit.

    • 6

Insert the new evaporator coils back over the evaporator unit, and place the mounting clamp back over the coils.

    • 7

Reinsert the bolts to the mounting clamp, and place the back interior panel back into the freezer. Reinsert the screws into the interior panel.

    • 8

Return the food to the freezer, and shut the freezer door. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
