Verify that the gas supply valve is turned on to the Trane furnace in order for the furnace to ignite. Most gas valves either turn counterclockwise to open or can be pushed down to open the valve and supply gas to the furnace.
Items placed around the furnace air vents or throughout the home on or near the air grilles can reduce air flow and restrict the furnace from igniting properly. Maintain a clear area around the Trane furnace and make sure that all return and intake air grilles are open and not blocked with items or material, such as drapes.
Over time, the gas burner may become dirty and restrict the ignition. Trane recommends that the gas burner be professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Owners who are confident in their ability to service the furnace can disconnect power and the gas supply to the furnace, open the access panel and use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner to carefully clean the gas burner area. Remove the top burner bracket and lift the burner up from the base. Clean the burners with a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. Do not touch the burner itself as the burner is very hot and may cause serious injury.
If power was interrupted or turned off, the furnace may need to be relit. Turn the thermostat to the lowest possible point and disconnect furnace power. Open the control access panel and rotate the gas control valve to “Off." Allow five minutes to pass and then smell carefully for gas around the entire surface of the furnace. Stop immediately if you smell gas, disconnect power and leave the house. Call your gas company. If there is no gas smell, turn the gas knob to “On” and close the front access panel. Set the thermostat to the desired temperature. The furnace will ignite automatically in approximately 15 minutes. Contact Trane for service if the furnace does not ignite and turn off both gas and power to the unit.
