How to Make a Vent for a Microwave

Over-the-range microwave ovens are mounted over your stove or kitchen counter. This configuration saves space in the kitchen. However, you need to take into account venting for the microwave. Since the venting is on top of the microwave, you need to make a hole in whatever cabinet or fixture the microwave attaches to. You can cut a vent hole for your microwave in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area where you intend to mount your microwave. Most microwaves come with a paper template with diagrams illustrating where to cut specific holes, such as the vent hole.

    • 2

Tape the template under the cabinet or fixture where you intend to mount the microwave. The area to cut the vent hole will be marked on the template. If you don't have a template, proceed to the next step.

    • 3

Measure the vent area on top of your microwave with a tape measure and mark the dimensions on the underside of the cabinet.

    • 4

Cut the vent area out of the cabinet with your saw. You can now mount your microwave onto the cabinet or fixture.
