How to Make a Kitchen Cabinet Into a Microwave Cart

A microwave cart is a convenient way to change an immovable piece of furniture into a moving and functional appliance. Since builders do not always include a microwave in their kitchens, the homeowner has to decide if she wants to place it on the counter, find a place to mount it or place it on a movable cart. Using a base cabinet that matches your existing cabinets is a clever way to integrate the microwave into the kitchen without losing counter space.

Instructions

  Calculate the weight of the cabinet and the weight of the microwave to figure what size casters to get. Don't forget to add the extra weight of the items you will be putting in the cabinet later. Choose plate casters for mounting to the base of the cabinet.

  Turn the cabinet over and place a 3/4-inch-thick block of wood in each corner. Drill pilot holes through the center of each block and into the base of the cabinet. Open the cabinet doors or drawers and screw the blocks into place with wood screws from the inside of the cabinet. Use screws that are shorter than the depth of the block and the cabinet base. Add a little wood glue to the base of the block before screwing it in place.

  Place the plate caster in the center of the block and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Repeat for each caster.

  Drill pilot holes where the markings are, after you remove the casters. Place the casters back over the pilot holes and screw them in place.

  Turn the cabinet right side up and place the microwave on the top. Push the cabinet into the position you like in your kitchen.
