How do I Replace a GE Microwave Handle?

Over time the handle on your GE microwave door might become loose or even be broken and require a replacement. Unlike handles on many appliances, the screws securing the microwave handle are not readily accessible. This is because the screws are behind the inner door panel. Replacing the GE microwave handle requires some disassembly of the door. Replacement handles for your GE microwave are available at appliance repair centers and authorized GE dealers.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE microwave power cord from the wall outlet. Although you are not working on any of the electrical components, it is a safe practice to disconnect the power source from the appliance.

    • 2

Open the GE microwave door and look for screws along the top and bottom edge of the door securing the inner trim panel. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver, if your model has screws.

    • 3

Find the three small tab holes on the inner trim near the door hinge. Insert a jeweler's flat-head screwdriver into each hole and pry the trim out slightly from the outer door. Take your time doing this so you do not break the plastic tabs.

    • 4

Insert a putty knife in the seam between the inner and outer door panel on the handle side of the door. Slowly pry the inner panel away from the outer panel enough that you can access the door handle screws.

    • 5

Remove the door handle screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver and pull the old handle away. Place the new door handle on the GE microwave, lining up the mounting holes with the holes in the outer door panel.

    • 6

Secure the handle with the retaining screws. Press the inner door panel back into the outer door panel. The inner tabs will click when they lock in place. Go around the entire perimeter of the inner door panel to ensure all tabs lock into place in the outer door panel.

    • 7

Close the GE microwave door and plug the power cord into the outlet.
