How to Secure a Ceiling Fan on a Concrete Ceiling

Ceiling fans are an economical method of cooling an area. The air movement the fans provide can be beneficial when it's warm or cool, resulting in significant energy savings. The standard ceiling fan is designed to be installed on a sheetrock ceiling with wooden ceiling joists supporting it. With some slight modifications, these fans can be installed on many surfaces, including a concrete ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the fan's mounting components. In the kit should be a bracket that screws into an electrical junction box in the ceiling. Take this bracket and use it as a template to mark the ceiling in the exact location for the fan to be mounted. Carefully mark each screw hole in the bracket onto the ceiling. Double-check these marks.

    • 2

Drill the holes, using a concrete drill bit. Wear eye protection as well as a dust mask to protect yourself from the falling concrete dust. Most concrete screws will come with a rubber insert that will be placed into the hole to act as a liner. Place an insert into each of the holes you have just drilled.

    • 3

Secure the bracket in place by installing a screw into each of the holes. The inserts will expand and help hold the screw firmly in place. When all screws are inserted, the mounting bracket should be securely mounted against the concrete ceiling.

    • 4

Splice the power wires from the fan motor/light kit to the swag wiring kit. Make certain all connections are secure and no bare wires are showing. Make certain the swag is long enough to travel from the ceiling fan, across the ceiling and down a wall to an electrical outlet.

Install the fan to the bracket, following the manufacturer's directions. This will vary from one brand to another, but most instructions come with easy-to-follow diagrams. Once the fan has been mounted, the blades installed and all housing put in place, you are ready to hang the swag wire.

Drill a hole approximately every 36 inches along the ceiling. Use the same inserts as before, then screw a wiring harness in place to hold the swag against the ceiling. Repeat this process until the swag is in the desired position. The fan is ready to be tested.
