How to Run a Fan on Low AC Voltage

Low voltage alternating current (AC) fans are commonly used as extraction devices in bathrooms and other spaces. These fans normally have a ballast to step down the 120 volts from the breaker panel to a lower AC voltage, suitable for the fan. Running a wiring a fan at this voltage is a matter of properly wiring this type of device, ensuring that the fan receives the right voltage.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire strippers
  • Small Philips/standard screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the breaker controlling the AC outlet leading to the junction box where the fan will be mounted.

    • 2

Unscrew the cover plate over the junction box with the appropriate screwdriver. Pull the three wires down.

    • 3

Unscrew the wire nuts covering the bare copper wire. Alternately, use the stripper tool to remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of each wire.

    • 4

Slide the three wires into the appropriate indicated slots in the plug on the low voltage transformer. Tighten the small set screws on the transformer to secure the wires.

    • 5

Mount the fan according to the manufacturer's directions. Turn the breaker back on at the electrical panel. Flip the switch wired to the fan's junction box to test.
