How to Remove the Recoil on a Strikemaster Auger

The Strikemaster Ice Auger is a handheld tool used to drill through iced-over lakes and other bodies of water so ice fishermen can fish. The Strikemaster uses a pointed spiral-shaped auger blade to drill down deep into the hard ice. It has a two-cycle gas powered engine manufactured by Tecumseh. The engine uses a pull-rope recoil starter system for starting. If the pull rope breaks or gets jammed, the recoil starter has to be removed in order to service it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the ice auger's spark plug wire with a pair of pliers.

    • 2

Unscrew the screws holding the ice auger's starter cover with a screwdriver, then lift the starter cover off the top of the engine.

    • 3

Pull on the starter rope lightly and cut the rope off just below the rubber handle.

    • 4

Unwind the remaining starter rope from off the recoil starter assembly.

    • 5

Insert a hole punch through the hole in the center of the assembly and tap out the center cap from the inside out with a rubber mallet.

    • 6

Insert a roll pin punch through the center hole from the outside and tap it with the mallet to remove the roll pin inside the recoil starter case.

    • 7

Lift the recoil spring assembly out by hand once the roll pin is removed.
