How to Remove the Auger Belt from a Craftsman Snow Thrower

The Craftsman snow thrower has three belts: One allows the snow thrower to move through the snow, and two others power the auger to throw the snow. Common signs that the auger belts may need to be replaced are breakage of a belt, or belt slippage that causes the machine to fail to throw snow in moderately deep conditions. You must do some dismantling of the snow thrower to access and remove the auger belts.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

    • 2

Locate the belt cover near the front of the engine, and remove it by unscrewing the two self-tapping screws.

    • 3

Remove the hairpin clip and two flat washers that hold the chute crank assembly to the discharge chute.

    • 4

Loosen and remove the six hex nuts and associated lock washers that hold the auger housing assembly to the frame assembly.

    • 5

Stand behind the snow thrower, and lift up on the handles while pulling back. This will separate the frame and housing. The rear auger belt will separate from the pulley. Remove the belt.

Push the idler pulley to the left to loosen the front auger drive belt. Lift the auger belt from the auger pulley.
