How to Adjust the Idle on a Weedeater

The Weedeater brand of lawn trimmers helps to make quick work of all of your lawn trimming chores. Keeping your Weedeater trimmer in peak condition includes regular oil changes, proper fuel and cleaning. Adjusting the idle is also a way to ensure your Weedeater is not burning fuel excessively or running poorly. The Weedeater should idle smoothly each time you release the trigger. If the engine stalls or fails to slow to an idle, it is time to make a minor adjustment.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the idle adjustment screw on your Weedeater trimmer. The screw is in between the engine housing cover and the air filter cover and is usually pointing toward the top. The screw is a Phillips-head with a small spring around the neck of the screw.

Place the Weedeater upright on the ground. The trimmer head will be off the ground in this position. Keep one hand on the trimmer at all times to prevent it from tipping on its side while making the idle adjustments.

    • 3

Start the Weedeater and hold onto the trigger. Allow the engine to warm up for two minutes. Release the trigger once the engine is warm and allow the Weedeater to idle.

Turn the idle screw clockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver if the engine stalls or begins to shut off. Turn the screw counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed if necessary. The Weedeater should idle smoothly without shutting off.
