Can You Grow Saint Augustine Grass From Seed?

St. Augustine grass grows best when installed as sprigs or sod, instead of seed. Seed for this grass variety is difficult to find and takes longer to establish than other grass varieties.
  1. Identification

    • St. Augustine is a turf grass type that grows best in hot climates. This grass type spread through runners, making a thick lawn that is able to withstand heavy traffic in full and partial sun areas. St. Augustine does not grow well in heavily shaded areas.

    Planting

    • It is possible to plant St. Augustine grass as sprigs or sod during anytime of the year. If you choose to plant St. Augustine seed, aim for midfall or early spring for best results. You want to complete germination and start establishment before the hot temperatures during summer. St. Augustine seed requires additional maintenance to keep the young sprouts growing during the hot and dry summer months.

    Care

    • Applying a grass starter fertilizer to the soil before planting St. Augustine seed, sprigs or sod will increase germination or root establishment. It is important to keep the soil moist during the first month of sprig and sod growth, or until seed germinates and begins to spread. Sprinkle the lawn with 1/4 inch or water each day during this time.
