How to Paint Metal Fences

If you need to paint a metal fence, you will have to contend with a pair of complications. First, unlike wood structures, metal fences are nonporous, making them poorly-suited for paint adhesion. You must coat the metallic fence with a special primer that will abrade the surface to promote adhesion, or the finish will chip away over time. In addition, because metal fences are slick, you will need to employ a specific application strategy that will discourage runs and drips.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Trim away any vegetation from the metal fence that could interfere with your ability to paint.

    • 2

Wash the fence using a pressure washer. Allow the metal fence to dry.

    • 3

Abrade the metal fence to promote paint adhesion by applying a coat of galvanized metal etching primer. Use a mini roller to apply the primer. Eliminate runs and drips by brushing them smooth using a 2- to 3-inch latex paintbrush manufactured for latex paints. Allow the etching primer to dry and cure for four hours.

    • 4

Wash all painting instruments with water.

    • 5

Apply a coat of exterior acrylic latex paint using the mini roller stocked with a fresh, clean roller cover. Apply in the same way you applied the primer. Allow the paint to dry for two hours, and then apply another coat if you can see the primer showing through.
